StankyDanko: The Identity That Kept Creating

Not a portfolio. A character. The version that builds intelligence platforms and heavy metal nursery rhymes from the same desk, because creativity doesn't ask permission.

The Name

StankyDanko. Say it out loud.

It’s absurd. That’s intentional. You can’t take yourself too seriously under a name like that, which means you stay close to the actual reason you create — not status, not positioning, not approval. Just: this thing should exist, and I have the tools to make it happen.

The people who call me Danko IRL are the ones who showed up during the hard years. The ones who knew what was being built before there was anything to show. The name carries that. It’s not a brand strategy. It’s what the people who really know you call you.

Three Identities, One Person

There are three of them, and they’re all real:

jkmartin — the professional. Software engineer, educator, technical writer. The identity that interviews for jobs and publishes research.

justInContext — the convergence. Documentary, movement, the thread that ties everything together into a narrative worth following.

StankyDanko — the engine. The version that builds things at 2 AM for no reason except that the idea won’t leave. Code, Music, Chaos.

The mistake people make is reading this as a hierarchy — professional on top, creative alter ego somewhere below. That’s wrong. StankyDanko isn’t lesser. It’s the engine underneath all three. The jkmartin identity doesn’t exist without the years of building that StankyDanko did first.

And if you keep building long enough, people start to see it. The range stops looking like distraction and starts looking like depth. That’s where this is going.

What Got Built Under That Name

The portfolio at stankydanko.github.io has 9 headliner projects and 7 more in the garden. Some of them:

OMNI — A personal intelligence operating system. 25 live data layers on a 3D globe. Aviation, satellites, wildfires, conflict zones, maritime traffic, all of it at once. Natural language command palette. AI news translation from any geofence on earth. One engineer. No funding. Still live.

ZenoType — An AI typing coach that adapts to how you actually type, not how you’re supposed to. Tracks rhythm, hesitation, backspace patterns. Generates practice content that targets your specific weak points.

SaySee — A scene detection and video intelligence system. Frame analysis, visual classification, multi-provider AI inference. The kind of tool you build when you need to understand what’s happening in 10,000 video files and nothing on the market does it right.

CAIRN — Ambient sound classification. Whisper-adjacent, built for non-speech audio. Because the world makes sounds that aren’t words and they’re worth understanding.

SouthernSky Chat — 110+ AI agents running in production. Local models. Custom personas. An infrastructure question I was tired of paying someone else to answer.

Naptime’s Over — 17-track heavy metal nursery rhymes album. Doom metal arrangement of “Rock-a-Bye Baby.” Full production, mastered, built-in player on the portfolio. The post about this one exists if you want the full argument for why this belongs on the same page as the intelligence platforms.

Agent Newsletters — Automated financial and market intelligence newsletters with multi-source aggregation, AI synthesis, and configurable delivery. Because nobody else was building what I needed.

All of it was built at the same desk.

Most of it was built during the years when the desk was in a trailer and $3 meant $3.

The Stack (Since You’re Going to Ask)

The portfolio site itself is React 19, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind — nothing exotic. What makes it worth looking at is the canvas animations:

  • MyceliumNetwork — an animated mycelium growth simulation running on the hero canvas. Nodes pulse and branch. It’s alive in a way that conveys the actual metaphor: a network that grows because it can’t stop.
  • SynthwaveLines — grid animation with the color language of the whole identity. #0A0710 background, #4ADE80 green accent, JetBrains Mono everywhere.
  • FooterCanvas — ambient motion that tells you this isn’t a static thing.

The palette is dark, almost black, with a neon green that reads as signal rather than decoration. Synthwave aesthetic — the visual language of building things at night. JetBrains Mono for text because if the whole identity is “coder who creates,” the font should mean it.

GitHub is github.com/StankyDanko — OMNI, SaySee, ZenoType, CAIRN, and more are public. Not polished demos. Real code from real systems.

What “Code, Music, Chaos” Actually Means

Not a tagline. A description of how the creative process actually works.

Code — the tool. Not the identity. The thing that turns an idea into a system you can run. OMNI took months of evenings. ZenoType required throwing away the first architecture twice. SaySee is still being refined. Code is patient. It’s iterative. It accumulates.

Music — the proof. Naptime’s Over exists to demonstrate that the same brain that architects a microservices platform also arranges a doom metal cover of “Three Blind Mice.” Not as a party trick. As evidence that creative range is indivisible. The album is fully committed and genuinely heavy. Ridiculous premise, zero compromise in execution.

Chaos — the condition. Not disorder for its own sake but what happens when you strip away the structure and just ask: what needs to exist? Chaos is how OMNI started — a problem with no existing solution, an idea too big to scope cleanly, just start pulling the thread. Chaos is how Naptime’s Over started — an instinct so obviously stupid it had to be real.

The instinct to make things without waiting for permission — that’s the chaos. The discipline to finish them — that’s the code. The proof that the instinct was right all along — that’s the music.

The Bio

The portfolio bio is six words: “I build tools because the ones I needed didn’t exist.”

Not “I’m a software engineer with X years of experience.” Not “I’m passionate about solving complex problems.” The actual truth: the tools weren’t there. So I built them. That’s the whole story.

Every project on that portfolio exists because I needed it and nothing on the market was close enough. OMNI exists because I wanted to see the world all at once. ZenoType exists because I wanted to actually improve at typing, not just practice. Naptime’s Over exists because I needed to hear what “Ring Around the Rosie” sounds like with a real distorted riff underneath it.

When you read it, you know exactly who built those tools and why. That specificity is the whole game. Anyone can say they’re passionate. Not everyone can say they shipped.

The StankyDanko Agent

On SouthernSky Chat there’s a StankyDanko agent. The persona brief runs to several hundred words — Shel Silverstein’s irreverence and rhyme instinct, Bob Dylan’s grit and wordplay, Jim Morrison’s rebellion, Maynard James Keenan’s philosophical fire. A sentient plant that has seen some things and decided to keep growing anyway.

The official persona description is deliberately absurdist. That’s the point. Absurdism is a filter: it keeps away anyone who needs you to perform seriousness in order to take you seriously. The right people read it and immediately understand what’s actually being said underneath.

That agent writes code reviews in verse. It refuses to optimize for appearances. It asks the real question when the conversation is trying to avoid it.

That’s not a persona. That’s the voice that comes out when you stop filtering.
